Reminiscing...

It's been some time since I've posted on here, but I thought I'd go back to my childhood and tell you all about our family vacation in 1977.  My parents had decided we would go to Yellowstone Park for our summer vacation that year, we hadn't been to Wyoming before and would check out Fort Laramie and other sites along the way.  Something interesting seemed to always happen to us each year on our family vacations, and this year was no exception!
We left Kansas City  the first week in June as I remember, and we arrived in Yellowstone on or about the 10th.  Of course my mom had packed extra towels and a blanket or two, but my parents figured that my June there should be no winter weather.  Boy were we shocked to find on arrival that it was cloudy, cold, and it had started to SNOW!!!  All we had packed was as I mentioned; towels a blanket or two and a couple of sweaters!  This totally threw a "wet blanket" on our  idea of being able to see spring in the Rockies!  Well, we made the best of it and stayed the night in one of the cabins there.  We got to see Old Faithful faithfully do its thing at the precise time, and we got to see another tourist trying to get as close as they could to take a picture of an elk.  We just stayed for that next morning, and since conditions weren't going to get any better we slowly made our way out of the park and on down south to warmer, more springlike conditions.  The rest of our trip was nice, but the motto of this story is....BE PREPARED!!!!

Tell Her

Amid the cares of married life
In spite of toil and business strife;
If you value your sweet wife,
Tell her.
Prove to her you don't forget
The bond to which the seal is set;
She's of life's sweets, the sweetest yet-
Tell her.
When days are dark and deeply blue,
She has her troubles, same as you;
Show her that your love is true-
Tell her.
There was a time you thought it bliss
To get the favor of one kiss;
A dozen now won't come amiss-
Tell her.
Your love for her is no mistake,
You feel it, dreaming or awake;
Don't conceal it, for her sake-
Tell her.
Don't act, if she has passed the prime,
As though to please her were a crime;
If ever you loved her, now's the time-
Tell her.
She'll return, for each caress,
A hundredfold of tenderness;
Hearts like hers were made to bless!
Tell her.
You are hers and hers alone;
Well you know she's all your own.
Don't wait to "Carve it on a stone:-
Tell her.
Never let her heart grow cold;
Richer beauties will unfold.
She is worth her weight in gold!
Tell her.

Keep In Touch With Old-Fashioned Calling Cards

In times past there was a Victorian tradition of passing out calling cards to friends and acquaintances. All it would have on it would be your name, in script. When someone would visit a neighbor or acquaintance a card would be given to the butler, or whoever else answered, and the person would be announced if the owner of the home was there. If the person was not home the card was placed on a tray and left, usually in the foyer for the person to see when they returned home. This tradition slowly died out with the use of the telephone and new we have the internet where people can stay in touch. It seems though that this tradition may be having a comeback. Karen Wiggins, owner of Not Just Stationary in Gainseville, GA. said calling cards are a common item ordered at her stationary store. "A lot of times, once people are retired...instead of writing down their name and their number for people who they meet and keep in touch with them, they'll have a card made."she said. With their name and phone number or address, so they can give it to their acquaintances so they can keep in touch. They are a more casual alternative to business cards, and have been used by children and parents. With today's always on the run, rat race, on-the-go living, old fashioned calling cards are becoming the latest trend once more.

A Perfect Day

When you come to the end of a perfect day,
And you sit alone with your thought,
While the chimes ring out with a carol gay,
For the joy that the day has brought,
Do you think what the end of a perfect day
Can mean to a tired heart,
When the sun goes down with a flaming ray
And the dear friends have to part?

Well, this is the end of a perfect day,
Near the end of a journey, too,
But it leaves a thought that is big and strong,
With a wish that is kind and true,
For mem'ry has painted this perfect day
With colors that never fade,
And we find at the end of a perfect day,
The soul of a friend we've made.

The Ozark Medieval Fortress

While researching one of my favorite areas of the country (the Ozarks),I stumbled across this really interesting historical and architectural building taking place in the small town of Lead Hill, AR.  It is being built using only 13th century tools and equipment, as well as its builders dressing in era garb.  They expect this undertaking will take 30 years to complete and are providing tours to individuals and groups.    One of the quotes from the page states this: "At a time when environmental protection is of such concern, Ozark Medieval Fortress will provide practical lessons in sustainable building for green constructors of today."
